From your lodgings you can stroll along the level trail to Gerlos-Gmünd, past the reservoir and to the Gasthof Kühle Rast. Here you cross a brief stretch of forest and then finally – but slowly – climb uphill. For about an hour you’ll hike through the narrow, romantic Schwarzach Valley, until at almost 1,400 m you’ve earned your apple strudel or another snack at the Jausenstation Schwarzachalm. Less experienced walkers can take Hiking Trail No. 8 from there to the Obere Schwarzachalm, while the more adventurous can continue further into the valley. Really experienced hikers can even hike the mountain trail to the 2,475-m-high Schwarzachscharte.
The Wimmer Valley is the ideal solution for beginners and more experienced hikers. Here, too, you take the Forest Trail along Gerlosbach, a local brook, to Gerlos-Gmünd. An easy walk along Hiking Trail No. 6 takes you to the Jausenstation Wimmertalalm, which offers snacks, in about 1 hour. Less experienced hikers can even take the trail over the Grundlochalm to reach approx. 1,760 m. From there, Trail No. 6 (marked black) takes more experienced hikers to Wimmerscharte at more than 2,500 m elevation.
Start from Gasthof Oberwirt and walk along Hiking Trail No. 5 into the Schönach Valley. After a short stop at the Stinkmoosalm, a popular mountain hut, to enjoy the beautiful view across the valley, you’ll reach the Jausenstation Lackenalm at 1,400 m in about 1 hour. And even if you’re not experienced but sure-footed and have good boots you can walk along the trail via the Issalm and the Pasteinalm to 2,000 m. For your reward you’ll have a breathtaking view of the mighty Schönachkees, a glacier. From the Issalm you can also reach the romantic Stackerlalm at 1.800 m.
For a nice and peaceful hike of about 3 hours take the trail around the Gerlos Water Sports Center Durlassboden. Start out from the Seestüberl restaurant at the crest of the dam and go along the left of the reservoir to the beginning of the Wildgerlos Valley, where you follow a blacktop road to the Alpengasthof Finkau. From here you climb past the Leitenkammerklamm, a gorge, to the picturesque Zittauer Hut (2,329 m) at the Wildgerlossee (lake).
Or you can stop for a snack at the Gasthof Finkau with its impressive view of the 3,300 m peaks of the Reichenspitzgruppe and then walk back along the reservoir past the Jausenstation Bärschlagalm, which offers snacks, to the Seestüberl on the crest of the dam. At the foot of the dam there is a parking area or you can cross the road and take the trail through the Inner Valley back to Gerlos.
The easy hike into the “thumb” of the five side valleys of the Gerlos, the Krummbach Valley, could also be called hut hopping. Altogether, three huts offering Austrian snacks and specialties await you on Trail No. 2. From the parking area at the Isskogel Chairlift the trail leads past the Almstüberl and the turnoff for Prölleralm, a very traditional alpine hut. You can then walk along the brook, until you reach the Jausenstation Krummbachrast, where snacks can be bought, and if you still have enough stamina you can take the trail via the Nöckental to the Isskogel top station.
The sled run at Hainzenberg is the longest lighted nature sled run of the Zillertal. You will make the ascent to 1.650 m above the sea level with the Gerlossteinbahn (gondola ride).
